Vermillon, South Dakota, is where Dr. Francis Townsend was stationed as a doctor during WWI, and lived for a while thereafter.  Townsend popularized the idea that our government shouldn’t let people too old or ill to work just die of starvation and poverty—his surge of popular support helped push through Social Security.  But of course, some people never choose to retire…as Buck Zumhofe reminds us in this great photo.
